DOC.LAB Coimbra, a dynamic project laboratory dedicated to advancing the art of documentary filmmaking, has officially opened submissions for its upcoming workshop. Set to take place from the 25th to 30th of March, 2025, in the historic city of Coimbra, Portugal, DOC.LAB offers filmmakers a unique opportunity to elevate their projects with the guidance of seasoned industry professionals.
This intensive, in-person workshop is designed to support documentary projects currently in the development stage. Filmmakers from around the world are invited to apply, with the aim of preparing their projects for both national and international markets. Participants will benefit from direct mentorship, as well as a collaborative environment where they can enhance their creative vision and refine the narrative and technical aspects of their films.
Eligibility Requirements
- DOC.LAB is open to any-length documentary projects from filmmakers of any nationality.
- Projects must be in development, and full participation in the lab is mandatory for selected participants.
- A second team member, such as a co-director, scriptwriter, or producer, may also attend alongside the lead director.
Application Process
Submissions must be completed through the official registration form, available on our website: https://www.doccoimbra.com/lab. The application must include a single PDF file containing the following:
- Project title, director's name, country, and city of origin;
- Short synopsis (up to 5 lines);
- Director's personal note (1 page);
- Argument (3-10 pages);
- Production process and narrative structure (up to 2 pages);
- Director's biography (up to 6 lines);
- Links to the director's photo and previous work;
- Links to two horizontal reference photos for the project.
The deadline for submissions is February 2nd, 2025, at 23:59 (UTC-1). There is no limit to the number of projects a filmmaker can submit. Submission fees and further details are available on the FilmFreeway page.
Selection Process
Between 8 and 10 projects will be selected to participate in DOC.LAB Coimbra. Applicants will be notified of the results by February 22, 2025, via email. Selected participants will also enjoy free access to the Coimbra Doc Festival, taking place concurrently with the Lab, as well as discounts on accommodations and meals at partner hotels and restaurants in the city.
Workshop Structure
Day 1: (03/26) Introduction to the Lab and detailed presentation of each project;
Day 2: (03/27) Roundtable discussion, group work and analysis of the projects;
Day 3: (03/28) Writing and project development, individually and with close guidance from tutors;
Day 4: (03/29) Final considerations on each project + preparation for pitching.

Additional Benefits and Conditions
While DOC LAB does not cover travel expenses, the organization will assist participants in finding affordable travel options. All selected projects will be required to include the laurel "PROJECT DEVELOPED AT DOC.LAB COIMBRA 2025" in the final film credits.
The application for DOC.LAB implies full acceptance of the program's rules and regulations. Any circumstances not covered by these guidelines will be addressed by the DOC.LAB organization.
